Managing Mammography Studies

You can align the height and centering of breast pairs with the Zoom to Breast Bounds option for an MG study.

  1. Right-click the image to display the image context menu.

  2. Select Spatial Tools > Zoom to Breast Bounds on the icon menu.

You can also configure Synapse to automatically Zoom to Breast Bounds when you open an MG study.

  1. Navigate to Settings > Image Display > Series.

  2. Enable Zoom to breast bounds on initial display to either automatically magnify breast images when opening a study, or to align the height and center of breast pairs when opening a study.

  3. Enable Show CAD to automatically show Computer-Aided Detection (CAD) markers when you open a study.

Viewing Breast Images with MG Quadrant View

You can focus the display of MG images to a breast quadrant and then cycle the display to the other breast quadrants. You have two options to use MG quadrant when opening an MG study:

  • Use the MG Quadrant View tool.
  • Use a reading protocol that defines the quadrant to display.
  1. Right-click the image to display the image context menu.
  2. Select Spatial Tools > Cycle QuadrantMode to enable MG quadrant view. Synapse displays the image in the first quadrant (upper inside -Q1).
  3. Select Spatial Tools > Cycle QuadrantMode again to cycle through each breast quadrant. When you select this option repeatedly, Synapse cycles through each quadrant, returns to the original image, and then starts the cycle again.

Opening a Breast Density Report

When a breast density report is available, Synapse displays a density field in the text overlay, such as Density: d, to indicate that a report exists.

  1. Do either of the following to open a breast density report for the current study:
  • Hover over the breast density active overlay Density: and click the active overlay to display the report.
  • Click DICOM Structured Report and PDF Viewer on the Viewer toolbar to display the report.
  1. If prior studies include breast density reports, use the arrows within the report window to access these additional reports.

MG Stack Matching

Synapse bases reading protocol matching for MG Stack protocols on laterality, view code sequence, view modifier sequence, modality, and procedure of each study where any procedure option is supported.

The reading protocol priority for MG stacking is dependent on the Make Stack protocols higher priority than same-series protocols option in User Settings. When you select the Make Stack protocols higher priority than same-series protocols option, the following is the reading protocol priority:

  1. MG Stack

  2. Near-match MG stack

  3. Exact series

  4. Near-match series

  5. Procedure and modality

  6. Modality

  7. Any study

When you do NOT select the Make Stack protocols higher priority than same-series protocols option, the following is the reading protocol priority:

  1. Exact series

  2. Near-match series

  3. MG Stack

  4. Near-match MG stack

  5. Procedure and modality

  6. Modality

  7. Any study

How Synapse Groups MG Images

Synapse groups MG images using the following DICOM tags which determine slider bar orientation markers for the MG modality:

  • Image Orientation (Patient)
  • Image Position (Patient)
  • Frame Laterality

Even if all images are in the same series as acquired, Synapse divides images into appropriate groups. Mammography images have a laterality of left, right, or center, and a various number of view code sequences, such as cranial caudal (CC) or medial lateral oblique (MLO). Synapse identifies each of the groups in a study and creates a series for the reading protocol to use. This grouping algorithm does not use the series UIDs of the image.

Synapse uses the results of the new image grouping for reading protocol selection. Instead of using a single series to match against a reading protocol, the image content of the study is used to match a reading protocol.

The Series Picker displays results of the mammography image grouping.
