Exporting DICOM to Media

Use the Exporting DICOM to Media feature to create a DICOM fileset to transfer studies to an optical disc, a drive, or a USB device such as a thumb drive (memory stick).

Note:

To avoid workstation performance issues, do not copy the media fileset to the root directory (C:\).

  • Copy the media fileset to removable media such as a compact disc or USB thumb drive.
  • If these options are not possible, clear the Create DICOM compliant fileset [DICOMDIR in root] option in the Dicom Transfer - to Media window. The media fileset will then be located in C:\SynapseMediaSets\SynYYYYMMDDHHMMSS ( YYYYMMDDHHMMSS is the timestamp of the fileset creation) and will serve as the root of the fileset, which means the DICOMDIR file will be located there. (If you selected a drive other than C: under Copy to local file system, the media fileset will be located there.)

To transfer images from multiple patients, select the Anonymize patient information option:

  • The patient information anonymization process anonymizes pixel data based on the study and image anonymization masks set in the Viewer for the study.
  • Anonymization is valid only within any one given media fileset.

Note:

The Exporting DICOM to Media feature uses the DD MMM YYYY date format where DD and YYYY are numeric values and MMM is the month. The Month is translated based on the current language, as specified in the Desktop Agent.

Prerequisites

You must have the DICOM Transfer privilege to use this feature.

To use this feature, Synapse must be launched through the Desktop Agent. See Opening Synapse from the Desktop Agent Icon.

Steps

  1. Open the All Studies Worklist and select one or more studies.
  2. Right-click and select DICOM Transfer > To Media. The DICOM Transfer - to Media page displays.
  3. Select from the options below and click Start. The transfer status displays.

If you want to do this ...

Choose this option

Copy Fuji DX and third-party DX For Processing images to media in their For Processing form.

  • Select Keep as DX For Processing.

Convert Fuji DX For Processing images to For Presentation images before copying to media.

  • Select Convert to DX For Presentation.
  • Note:
    • This is the default option for Fuji DX For Processing images.
    • Synapse cannot convert third-party DX For Processing images. Images are copied to media in their For Processing form.

Copy Fuji MG and third-party MG For Processing images to media in their native For Processing form.

  • Select Keep as MG For Processing.

Convert Fuji MG For Processing images to MG For Presentation images before copying to media.

  • Select Convert to MG For Presentation.
  • Note:
    • This is the default option for Fuji MG For Processing images.
    • Synapse cannot convert third-party MG For Processing images. Images are copied to media in their native For Processing form.

Copy the fileset to media using the stored as-is compression instead of completely recompressing the entire study.

  • Select Create fileset as-is.

Copy the fileset to media using compressed JPEG lossless.

  • Select Compressed JPEG Lossless.

Copy the fileset to media as decompressed.

  • Select Uncompressed LEE.
  • Synapse generates all images in the media fileset that contain pixel data as uncompressed, rather than JPEG Lossless.

Record data to an optical disc.

  • Select Record to optical disc.
    • Data is always recorded to the root of the optical disc.
    • If you use a rewritable optical disc, any existing content on the disc is deleted as part of the recording process. A prompt displays for you to verify that you want to delete the content. This is the default option.
  • Note:
    • Synapse displays a prompt indicating the number of media needed to perform the export.
    • Optional: To recalculate the number of media required, replace the media, wait for the recorder to read the media, and then click Recalculate for new media…
    • Click Continue to perform the export. Synapse groups objects on discs according to the order of patients, studies, series, and objects returned by the database. When one disc is finished, Synapse prompts you to label the disc and insert a new disc.

Select a drive letter for the fileset copy destination.

  • Select Copy to local file system.
  • Synapse enables the Select Drive and Create DICOM compliant fileset [DICOMDIR in root] options.

Copy the fileset to the root directory of the selected drive.

  • Select Create DICOM compliant fileset [DICOMDIR in root].
  • This is the default option.
  • The root directory is the fileset root. If you do not select this option, Synapse copies the fileset to \SynapseMediaSets\SynYYYYMMDDHHMMSS.

Anonymize the information in the DICOM header for all of the images that are copied.

  • Select Anonymize patient information.
  • Note:
    • Synapse scrambles the dates, sets times to midnight, generates new UIDs, and sets names to Unknown, Unknown 1, and so on.
    • The hierarchical structure of the images relating to a series, a series relating to a study, and a study relating to a patient is preserved.
    • The patient information anonymization process anonymizes pixel data based on the study and image anonymization masks set in the Viewer for the study.
    • To ensure Synapse saves Anonymization Masks, close the studies or save them manually before opening the DICOM Transfer page from the Worklist.
    • WADO-URI must be configured on the Synapse server for the pixel anonymization process.

Create a .zip archive from the fileset.

  • Select Create ZIP Archive.
  • Optional: To create a password-protected .zip file, select Password protect ZIP Archive and enter the password in the Password field.
  • Note:
    • Synapse creates a password-protected .zip archive as a self-extracting .zip file (an executable instead of a .zip file.)
    • The Synapse Media Fileset dialog box displays when you launch the executable. See Using the Synapse Media Fileset Dialog Box.

Cancel the transfer operation and close the DICOM Transfer - to Media page.

  • Click Close or click the X button in the top right.

Results

When Synapse completes the transfer successfully, the suggested label for the media displays and the optical disc, if applicable, will be ejected from the recorder.
